"Miss D," of Chestertown, MD, died February 23, 2009 in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 95.
Mrs. Dickerson was born on February 2, 1914, daughter of the late Arthur Thomas Legg and Edna Vickers Crouch Legg. She was a lifetime resident of Cliff City.
"Miss D" is fondly remembered by generations of Washington College alumni, faculty and staff as the manager of the College Snack Bar, which she ran for nearly 40 years before leaving in 1991 to help her daughter launch "Sharon's Diner" in Chestertown.
A 1988 article in the Washington College Magazine cites Miss D's devotion to her student patrons, describing her throwing them Christmas parties, sending snacks to hospitalized students, and helping students out of financial jams. The article also lauded her for her culinary skills, crediting her for "doing for cheese and egg sandwiches what MacDonald's did for hamburgers."
In 1988, the Kent and Queen Anne's Chapter of the Washington College Alumni Association named Miss D an honorary alumna, presenting her with a formal citation at a champagne and caviar event held at the Snack Bar in Hodson Hall.
Mrs. Dickerson was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Philemon Dickerson, in 1980, her two daughters Sharon Hurd and Patricia Ann Brown, her grandson Philip "Cheesedog" Hurd, a sister Mary Isabell Smith, and three brothers—Richard Wilson Legg, Thomas Arthur Legg and John August Legg.
She is survived by her granddaughter and caregiver Debbie Brown and a sister Doris Legg Yerkes, both of Rock Hall, MD. Condolences may be addressed to Ms. Brown at 6226 Dorlon Drive, Rock Hall, MD 21661.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will take place in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.
Memorial gifts may be made to Chestertown Nursing and Rehab Activities Fund, 415 Morgnec Rd. or to Kent & Queen Anne Rescue Squad, Box 126, both Chestertown, MD 21620.
