JOHN CALVIN BANKERT
Class of 1925
John Calvin Bankert

A team member of the original Flying Pentagon, Johnny Bankert captained the undefeated 1924-25 basketball team that racked up 20 victories.

He developed from a scrub freshman into a senior standout, earning four letters during the Dumschott-Carroll era of Pentagon basketball. His biggest thrill came against the University of Maryland when he held their star center Supplee scoreless. His play at center in the age of the jump ball after every field goal stamped him as one of the best centers in Maryland in that decade.

The graduate of Westminister High School also played football in 1924, lettering as an end.

Off the court and field, Bankert was president of the Adelphia Literary Society and the Cotillion Club, and was vice-president of the Student Government Association and the Pentagon Club.

After graduation, Bankert played semi-pro basketball on the Fort Pierce, Florida team that captured the state championship.
