TRACY PEEL COUTTS
Class of 1992
Tennis
Tracy Peel Coutts matriculated to Washington College from Johannesburg,
South Africa, in 1988. During the next four years she performed
at the number one position on the womens tennis team. Those
close to the program consider Tracy the most outstanding womens
tennis player to ever represent the College.
The period from 1989 to 1992 were four of the most productive
years for Washington College womens tennis, which finally
had became truly competitive. The 53 wins in 77 contests certainly
indicated that the women's program had reached the high level
of competition demonstrated earlier by the men's program. The
womens team made collegiate history in 1991 by being the
only womens varsity program to be a Middle Atlantic Conference
champion. That year also marked the first time Womens Tennis
achieved a national ranking by finishing their season as 12th
in all of Division III. In 1992 that same team qualified and competed
in the NCAA national tournament. Since that time, Washington College
has become an annual contender for the women's Centennial Conference
team and individual championships, and continues to gain recognition
on the national level.
Tracy Peel Coutts was the leader of a group of women who came
to believe that they could compete with any tennis team on the
Washington College schedule.
Overall, Tracy was a four-time All-American selection in both
singles and doubles, a NCAA singles finalist, twice a singles
semi-finalist, a NCAA doubles semi-finalist, a National Rolex
finalist, a regional Rolex singles and doubles champion, a Middle
Atlantic Conference doubles champion, and achieved a personal
high national ranking of #2. She served as co-captain of the womens
team in her senior year and was elected two times as their Most
Valuable Player. At graduation, she was selected to receive the
Bo Blanchard Sportsmanship and the Senior Athletic awards.
After graduation, Tracy returned to her home in South Africa.
She was married six years ago, and three years later returned
to the United States to make this her home. She is mother to three-year-old
daughter Hannah. After a ten-year hiatus, she has once again taken
up the sport of tennis and is playing in a USTA league. Previously
employed by the Heritage Financial Consultants as a sales manager
in national telemarketing, Tracy and her family will soon be moving
to San Diego, California.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct
Tracy Peel Coutts into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 5th day
of October 2002.
