DOUGLAS R. BYRNE
Class of 1979
Even before coming to Washington College, Doug Byrne accomplished
a great deal on the basketball court. A four-year varsity player
at Annandale High School, he was selected to the All-Washington,
DC Met first team and the Virginia All-State first team in his
senior year.
Washington College came to depend on him at both the power forward
and center positions, at a time when the schedule included such
Division I teams as Duke, Richmond, William and Mary, Navy, UMBC,
George Washington, Virginia Union and Loyola College, as well
as some of the strongest teams in Divisions II and III. A four-year
starter, he was an excellent ball handler and rebounder, and one
of the top scorers, entering the 1,000 point club in his senior
year. He tallied 276 pts in 1975-76, 296 in 1976-77, 347 in 1978
and 443 in 1979, for a total of 1,362 points. His career rebounding
total was an astounding 600. The Middle Atlantic Athletic Conference
recognized him for three consecutive years as a top player, naming
him to its All Conference first team in 1978 and 1979. He was
on the Baltimore Sun’s All-State Teams in 1978 (second team)
and in 1979 (first team). Additionally, his teammates voted him
MVP in 1978 and co-MVP in 1979.
As an undergraduate, Doug was active in the Theta Chi Fraternity
and served two years as the assistant coach of the women’s
varsity softball team. He graduated with a degree in political
science.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct
Doug Byrnes into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame
on this second day of October, 2004.
