The Recent Alumni & Current Student Involvement Committee of the Alumni Board is happy to once again sponsor the WC Service Challenge. The Challenge is extended to the entire Washington College community—students, alumni, staff, faculty, visitors and governors, friends, parents—and consists of reaching the goal of completing 17 service projects, in all the communities where our Shoremen live and work, in the 82 days between Birthday Ball and Commencement/Reunion (February 21 through May 13, 2010). Any individual or group of WC alumni can participate by submitting a brief description of their service project and pictures from the service project to the Alumni Office by May 14. For service project ideas, please see last year's Challenge website. Show your Washington College spirit and enjoy helping those in your community with fellow Shoremen.

Can you imagine what it would be like to attend, let alone chair, your 70th Washington College Reunion? That's exactly what Nathan Tattar '39, now 91 years-old, volunteered to do this past year. Why does he do it? He loves Washington College and wanted to connect with old classmates and the memories of those great college days once again.
From a young age, Nathan learned the rewards of tenacity and determination. After college, he took a girl named Shirley out on a first date. Even though Nathan barely knew her, he proposed marriage that very day. “You'll let me know when you are ready to say ‘yes,' ” Nathan proclaimed. It seems his tactics worked. Nathan and Shirley were married on Christmas Day, 1945. Nathan and his wife, Shirley now live in Ardmore, PA; they have grown a family over the years to include two children and two grandsons.
Nathan joined the 1st US Calvary in 1942, one of the most famous and decorated combat divisions of the United States Army. Nathan, a 1st Lieutenant responsible for a unit of 14 men, received the bronze star along with his unit for bravery in combat. Making one of the WWII newsreels of the day, Nathan was one of the first men, alongside of General MacArthur, in the invasion of Leyte.
Nathan always treasured his time at Washington College, which he attended on a full scholarship. He continues to give back to the school that gave him so much by volunteering as a Class Reunion Chair.

More than 460 alumni are actively networking, posting jobs, joining discussions and learning about Washington College today, thanks to the efforts of Kate Lackey-Wideman '95.
Kate is a virtual volunteer for Washington College; she organizes and updates the Washington College Alumni group on the site LinkedIn.
Kate launched the Washington College Alumni LinkedIn Group as a project for a professional course she took on social networking. Since then, the WC group has become a helpful resource for many alumni interested in career networking and reconnection.
Kate now lives in Tampa Bay, Florida, with her husband, Danny, her dog Lucky, and her cat Precious. While she is excited to begin a new position in loss mitigation for JP Morgan Chase, she remains sentimental about the years that she spent in Chestertown.
If you are interested in joining the WC networking group on LinkedIn, visit the group site, and click "Join this Group." Or, if you would like to volunteer for Washington College, submit a volunteer inquiry form.
